Trick or Treating Tips for a Safe Halloween Experience
Halloween is such a fun time for kids because they can dress
up as whatever they want and go door to door to get trick-or-treating candy. However,
for parents it can cause worries as to what kind of candy their child is
receiving and the fact that trick-or-treating generally takes place at
nighttime with lots of new people around. Here are some safe places and tips for
giving your kids a safe Halloween experience.
Trick-Or-Treating in Oswego County and Syracuse
SUNY Oswego Safe Trick or Treat
Come Celebrate Halloween early in the Marano Campus Center

for the children. This event will take place on October 27, from 11:00 am to
2:00 pm. Admission is one canned good per child to support Oswego’s local food
bank.
Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego is hosting a “SAFE Trunk or Treat Night” which allows you and your child to decorate the trunk of your car and head to Lighthouse Lanes to hand out candy and check out other trunks and get candy. This is a great option for your kids especially if they love
animals. This event is called Zoo Boo and it takes place October 19, 20, 26 and
27 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. For Zoo Members, there is an $8 fee per child for the
event, but additional admission is free. For non-members, there is an $8 fee
per child for the event plus regular zoo admission. There are many activities
your child can participate in such as creepy-crawly animal encounters, keeper
talks, games and of course trick or treating. Have your child dress up, bring a
goody bag and enjoy Halloween in the daylight.
Tips for Safe Trick-Or-Treating
Go to Every Door with Them
Sometimes it can be tempting to wait at the end of a
driveway while your child goes to the front door for candy. Trick-or-treating
is fun for kids, but going to each door is very repetitive for parents. We
recommend not waiting while they walk to the door by themselves, especially if
they are under 5. Instead we recommend going to each door with them. Your
children will always be safer when they are not only within eyesight, but also
when they are within arms reach of you!
Safe Check Halloween Candy Before Eating
While it may be tempting for your child to dig into their
candy bag as soon as they get their first handful of candy, it’s important to
have them wait until they get home. This is so that you can check their candy
to make sure there are no choking hazards or pre-opened candy. Check out this
article by Little Things for more tips on how to check your child’s candy. https://www.littlethings.com/candy-safety
Watch Where You’re Walking
While it is the responsibility of drivers to yield to
pedestrians when they are crossing the street, they may not see you or your
child, especially if they are in dark colors. It is important to stay alert and
even put reflective tape on your child so they can be seen easier and stay
safer.
Have Your Kids Where Necklace Flashlights
It is very important for you to be with your kids at all
times, however there is a chance they may wander away from you while you are
tending to another child. Have all your children wear flashlight necklaces so
it is easier to spot them in a crowd.
Be Careful with Masks
If your child’s costume involves wearing a mask, make sure
they are still able to see with their peripheral vision. This will reassure
that they can see all angles around them and watch for oncoming traffic or
other groups of trick or treaters.
Use Nontoxic Makeup
If your child’s costume involves wearing makeup, be sure to
use non-toxic makeup so there is less of them having a skin reaction. Many
Halloween makeups are very low quality and can contain ingredients that aren’t
great for the skin, especially the face as this area is often more sensitive
than other areas.
