Excellence in Preschool Curriculum

Great preschools offer curriculums that are proven to build life long learning skills for preschool children.  High quality preschool programs incorporate curriculum that meets New York State Prekindergarten Standards and Common Core Foundations. In Oswego and Syracuse area, the Little Lukes rigorous preschool curriculum has a focus on school readiness, pre-reading, pre-writing, and math skills to exceed parent expectations.

Parents Examine Full Day Preschool Curriculum

Many parents ask about the curriculum used and the educational goals of their 3-5 year old children. Center-based preschool is more than just games and crafts, it is a time to prepare for the elementary years of school while building self esteem and social skills.

Implementing Preschool Learning Standards in Central New York

Little Lukes has been implementing New York State’s Prekindergarten Standards and Common Core Foundations in preschool classrooms for the past 5 years.  The common core is a set of “high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy,” according to the official website. Although the standards are at a national level, the decision is made by the individual states about whether or not it’ll be used in their school districts.

Excellent Lesson Planning and Training for Educators

Jessica Ellis, Curriculum Coordinator for Little Lukes, prepares the preschool lesson plans for all 5 locations in Syracuse and Oswego area.  Ellis explains, “I use new materials on the cutting edge of preschool programming to coordinate with NYS Common Core Standards.”  She went on to say that New York State is very clear with the expectations for the classrooms and even provides sample lesson plans for educators.

Preschool Age Appropriate and Fun Learning Activities

The most important part about this school readiness is making the experience fun and age appropriate.  The preschool children at Little Lukes Preschool & Childcare Center in Oswego, Fulton, Radisson, Dewitt and Pulaski learn these concepts through rich, age appropriate and fun activities.  Weekly themes tie abstract concepts into real life experiences for the children, and incorporate friendly characters for teaching letters and hands-on learning centers for counting.  See our Preschool Learning Areas Chart about see a sample of our English Language Arts Preschool Curriculum.

Integrating Real Life Themes into the Language Rich Preschool Curriculum

For example, preschool children learn about Families and Communities, including a week learning about helpers in the communities where they live, such as the police, firefighters, farmers and grocers, mail carriers, etc.  To connect to real life experiences children will hear stories giving details about community helper jobs, practice identifying objects used by community helpers to do their jobs and be able to act out being these important community members via their dramatic play area. Additionally, Mr. H, a happy-hair hairstylist puppet will visit to teach about his job and other objects and tasks associated with the letter H!

Highly Educated Preschool Teachers and Early Childhood Professionals

In addition to a certified daycare lead teacher for the preschool classroom, Little Lukes has the benefit of several other certified educators in each classroom.  Being a SCIS preschool means children with special needs are integrated into the classroom for the program time.  During the 5-hour  “program” time each day, Little Lukes staff includes a New York State Certified Special Education Teacher, and two Teacher Assistants with NYS TA certifications. This highly trained team of educators works in a collaborative environment.
