4 Spring Allergy Tips to Lessen the Blow

The days are getting longer, the temperature is rising, and everything is starting to turn green outside. Goodbye winter and hello spring! We’re sure everyone can agree that the best part about spring is finally being able to comfortably go outside again.

With all the different plants and trees coming out of winter dormancy, we start to see leaves popping up and blooms budding. This is also about the time when your child may start showing signs of a congested, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes. More like, goodbye winter and hello spring allergies!

Kids will be kids and when they know it’s warm enough to go outside without a coat, there’s not much we can do to control their excitement. If your child experiences spring allergies every year, it’s inevitable they’ll experience them this year. But there are a few things you can do to lessen the blow – pun intended!

How can I help my child with seasonal allergies?

Close the Windows

First things first, let’s be proactive. Although you may be super tempted to open your windows every chance you get, it may be wise to keep them shut on days when the pollen count is high. Pollen.com is a great place to go for daily information on the national and local allergy forecast.

Clean Your Home

During the months when plants and trees are pollenating heavily - clean, clean, clean! Sweeping, mopping, and dusting various surfaces can cut down on the amount of allergens depositing in your home. Every Day Health has a great article on the do’s and don’ts of home cleaning for allergy sufferers!

Wash Up and Change

Make sure your little one washes their hands and changes their clothes as soon as they come in from outside. These both will help keep pollen and dust off their hands, and subsequently off their face.

Bonus: At every Little Lukes center, every child washes their hands as soon as they come inside from the playground. This too will help keep as many allergens away from your child as possible.

Be Mindful of Outside Time

Keep a daily check on the weather. If it is really dry and windy that day, it may be helpful to limit your child’s time outside or opt for an indoor activity. You’re probably thinking, “yeah right, my child is too energetic!” Luckily, What Moms Love has a great list of indoor activities for energetic kids.
