Social and Emotional

q Develops a social smile (smiles in response to caregiver)
q Begins to enjoy playing with a person
q Becomes more expressive with face and body
q Imitates some movements and facial expressions

Speech and Language

q Smiles at the sound of a familiar voice
q Babbling begins with vowel sounds (cooing, gooing, and gargle sounds)
q Turns head toward the direction of a sound
q Startles to a loud or new sound

Sensory

q Intently watches faces
q Follows moving object with eyes
q Appears to recognize familiar people from a distance
q Begins using hands and eyes together
q Startles to a loud or new sound

Cognitive

qFollows moving objects with eyes
qFocuses on faces
qLooks at a toy in own hand
qWatches and/or notices own hands

Gross Motor

qRaises head and chest when on stomach
qStretches legs and kicks when on back or stomach
qPushes down on legs when on a flat surface
qKicks feet alternatively (one foot kicks at a time)

Fine Motor

qSupports upper body with arms when on stomach
qOpens and shuts hands
qBrings hands to mouth
qSwipes at a dangling object with hands
qHolds and shakes a toy in hand
qAccidently releases objects
qWatches own hands

Each child develops at his/her own pace. Do not be alarmed if your child does not follow this exact sequence. If you have concerns about your child’s development, contact your doctor.
